Mini-Camps and Specials at Camp AHA!

(please note the “camper extra fee” for fees that are in addition to daily/weekly camp fees,

 and the “non-camper fee” for kids wanting to attend that class only and not participate in other daily Camp AHA! activities)


Computer Weeks: with Mrs. Patricia Palmer


Computer Painting: June 29  (9:00-11:30) - for any age student: Students will learn to use CoreFX,  a computer painting/drawing program. We will discuss some techniques used by artists and look at sample paintings by accomplished artists. The students will do 2-3 pieces using various techniques such as pointillism and water color wash. Digital Story Telling: June 30, (9:00-11:45) - for students in Grade 2 and up:   Students will combine graphics, text and audio to create a story “written” by them.                     Camper extra fee: 0                                                                                                                           Non-camper fee:  $10


Coding with Dot and Dash: July 5 & 6 (9:00 – 11:00) - for students in Grade 2 and up: Students will use the website code.org to learn and/or review how to “code”. The coding will be applied to operate robots, Dot and Dash, owned by NCES.                                                               Camper extra fee:  $5

Claymation:   July 12, 13 & 14  (9:00 – 11:45) - for students in Grades 2 and up: Bring your imagination and creativity! Students will create animations using clay. The process involves thinking of an idea, creating a storyboard, step-by-step creating frames using a camera and the computer, and assembling these frames into a short animated movie. Imagination, focus, patience and perseverance are required. As time and students’ interests permit, other forms of computer animation may be explored. Note: Students work in teams for the purpose of sharing cameras.                                                                                                                                 Camper extra fee: $10                                                                                                                         Non-camper fee:  $35

Intro to Lego Robotics 1: July 19, 20 & 21 (9:00 – 11:45) - for students in gr. 3 and up
Our emphasis will be on understanding the coding with limited building with Legos. Our goal is to learn the code needed to make Lego “robots”.  Focus, patience and perseverance are required.
Note: Students will be working in pairs and space is limited                        Camper extra fee: $10                                                                                                                        Non-camper fee:  $35       

Lego Robotics 2: July 26, 27, and 28, (9:00 -11:45): For students who attended Robotics 1 the previous week or Lego Robotics last summer. The goal is to create a moving vehicle and program it with sensors. Focus, patience and perseverance are required.                                    Camper extra fee:  $10

Note: Students will be working in pairs and space is limited.                               Non-camper fee:  $35



Sports Weeks: with the A-Team

Camp AHA! is so excited this year to have 2 amazing coaches, Amanda and Alex (the A-Team!). Together they will work with all of the kids’ skill and age levels. With their combined coaching experience and years of working with kids, this should be a banner year for our sports program!


Tennis:   9:00 – 11:45 - all ages and abilities. This is a great sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime! We’ll cover the beginning basics, learn new skills and techniques, get a handle on serving, and practice it all in games with our teammates! Bring your racket if you have one!

            June 26 – June 30 (all ages)      and/or                       July 31 – August 4 (all ages)                                                                                                  

Soccer:   9:00 – 11:45, for ages and abilities. We’ll practice our skills, learn new ones, but still have plenty of time for some fantastic games to perfect what we’ve learned!                        

            July 4 – July 7 (all ages)            and/or                       August 7 – 11 (all ages)


Basketball:   9:00 – 11:45, for all ages and abilities. We are really hoping to have some serious basketball players join this class so we can improve each players’ game for next b’ball season.

            July 10 – July 14 (all ages)      and/or             July 24 – July 28


Disc or Frisbee Golf:   9:00 – 11:45, for all ages. The up and coming new sport for everyone! We will all be learning together and will be visiting the new disc golf course by Caddie Shack. If all goes well, some of their regular players will meet with us to share their passion of the sport!

            July 17 – July 21 (all ages)


Volleyball: 9:00 – 11:30, for all ages and abilities. Even though we’ll be playing in the sand court, we will be learning the skills that can be used in any volleyball game. And we can show you how an 8-year old can still compete against adults!        

            August 14 – August 18 (all ages)

Cheerleading: Erin will introduce kids to the many aspects of cheerleading, and depending on their age and ability levels, she will work with them to improve their skills in tumbling, jumps, motions, stunts, and dance, and will then show the kids cheers, chants and formations.

            June 26 – 30 (9:00-10:30) - for grades K-3                             Non-camper fee:  $30

            July 10–14 or Aug 14-18 (9:00-11:00) - for grades 2-5          Non-camper fee:  $40

Movement and Dance: Incorporating many forms of dance, both current and from around the world, our kids will learn the joy of freedom through movement.           Camper extra fee:   none

4-H at the Douglas Library – The Douglas Library will be hosting 4 days with various 4-H projects and activities that will end with a 4-H Fair on July 29. We have been invited to bring kids over to join in the fun! 11:00 on June 30, July 7, 14 & 21          Camper extra fee:  none

Team Building with WSS and Susan B. Anthony Project – Every Monday from about 12:30 to 1:00, we will be treated to fun interactive exercises in team-building, such as bullying, space invaders, friendship, relieving stress, and managing anger.                              Camper extra fee:  none

Connecticut Science Center –  August 4 (9:00 – 5:00): Come spend the day at the exciting Science Center in Hartford! Explore and discover the amazing hands-on activities & displays! This is partially funded by a grant from the 21st Century Fund for HVRHS        Camper extra fee:  $10

Sharon Playhouse matinee performance of  “The Music Man”  –  Aug. 10 ( 1:00 to 5:00 ):           Join us for a fun afternoon at the theater! This promises to be a great show!       Camper extra fee:  $15

The Not-So-Good Old Days: Childhood in Colonial New England  – August 15 (10:00 to 11:30) –         Ever wonder what people used for toilet paper a long time ago? Wonder what they did for diapers for their babies? How about daily chores for kids? Come get some answers to these and other questions with lots of hands-on activities and fun!!      Camper extra fee:  none

Basic Street Smarts for Kids – date TBAKitty & Joel of Defense Mechanics will present a workshop to help kids gain simple but important tools necessary for their personal safety.

Field Trips, Guest Programs, and Last Minute Activities –Be on the lookout for announcements as new and exciting opportunities arise during the summer!


Daily Schedule – Mornings are when we have organized activities, such as our mini-camps and Summer Science. For kids not doing these activities, we have arts/crafts, games, nature hikes, etc. Lunch begins at 11:30, followed by “free time”. We’re at the Town Pool from 1 to 4 or so, and for those kids not swimming, we will have organized field games in the field next to the pool, as well as arts & crafts at our home base.


Meet the Staff:


Lynn Nania, director – Lynn is a co-founder of AHA! and coordinates activities and schedules, takes care of the finances, and assumes all duties of a director. - CPR/First Aid certified.


John Mahoney, Camp Meister – John brings to Camp extensive experience running kids’ programs, and along with his great imagination and excitement of discovery to share with the kids, we have a real treasure running  the show! - CPR/First Aid certified.


Chris Claydon  – Among many of the details that Chris handles effortlessly, she will be in charge of all of the art and craft activities. She is wonderfully talented and has an endless supply of ideas and energy to share with the kids. Camp wouldn’t be camp with Chris! - CPR/First Aid certified.


Erin Mahoney – Now with us for her third summer, Erin is a certified Cheerleading coach and is trained to teach dance, acro, and movement as well. Many of our campers also know her as a frequent substitute teacher in the area. - CPR/First Aid certified.


Amanda Ford –  This is also Amanda’s third summer at Camp and she is a regular during the AHA! school year as well. The kids are her number one priority, so she’ll make sure that each camper goes home a more confident and skilled player, or at least as a happy camper! - CPR/First Aid certified.


Alex Baker – Alex is back with us after several years away running his own summer camp in New York State. He has also coached at several local schools so quite clearly has the experience, knowledge and calling to join us as a co-coach for the sports program.  - CPR/First Aid certified.


Mason Lynehan – In grade school, Mason spent many years participating in AHA!, so he truly knows the program from its core. Last year, as a first time counselor, he amazed us with his energy, his enthusiasm, and his desire to learn! We are thrilled he’s back this year!


Caitlyn Cecchinato-Flint – New to us this year, Caitlyn just graduated from high school, but has a long history with AHA! as a past participant in the program. We fully expect her to fit right in with the kids!


Patricia Palmer  – Mrs. Palmer needs no introduction to most of you since she is a regular substitute computer teacher at NCES. Her enthusiasm and love for the kids and teaching will be quite evident during our Computer Camp series.



General Information


  • Our main entrance to Camp AHA! is to the left and behind the school (look for stairs to our room on the corner of the building). But we will also be operating out of the opposite end of the school this summer in the kindergarten wing. Look for our signs!!

  • We open at 7:30 and close at 5:30 but our program hours are 9:00 – 4:00. Our fees are based on our program hours, so a $5 fee is charged for early drop-off or late pick-up.

  • Campers need to bring their non-heatable lunch and snacks each day. If we have to provide a simple lunch because he/she does not have one, we will charge you $5.00.

  • We do sell snacks - be prepared to be asked for spending money by your child! Let us know if purchased snacks are off limits, or if you would like to run a tab.

  • Campers need to bring a swimsuit/towel. We go to the town pool on all good swimming afternoons. Please send sunscreen, bug repellant (with your child’s name on it). If you do not provide it and we have to use our own, we will charge you $1.00 per application.

  • Walk-in campers are always welcome, at the daily rates. Pre-registration is suggested for planning purposes, but is not mandatory.

  • If your child is taking swim lessons at the Town Pool, let us know so we can coordinate getting him/her back and forth.

  • Notices are often displayed on the bulletin board in the Camp AHA! room. Check it often for field trip or special event day announcements and other information.

  • For field trips, we must have advance sign ups in order to reserve a bus. A separate fee may be charged for a few of the trips.

  • Unless otherwise notified, we will still have a camp program running at NCES even when there is a field trip for those kids who are already enrolled in a mini-camp or have conflicts with the trip schedule.

  • Payment for Camp is expected in advance, by the day, week, month or summer.

  • If you don’t know your schedule when sending in your pre-payment or deposit, we’ll apply it to your account and apply debits as used. We do not need to know up-front which days your child is attending (although it would be nice if you do know), but we would like a deposit towards his/her attendance.

  • We do not automatically give credits for no-shows on any pre-paid day(s) but will issue a credit if your child was absent due to illness or family emergency. No cash refunds.

  • Any child who is dropped off at Camp AHA! without payment in advance may be allowed to attend that day, if there are no overdue amounts owed, but will be refused further admission until amounts owed are paid in full.

  • If you need to talk to me about financial arrangements, please call me at 860-824-0393.

  • Outstanding bills will be posted on our “billing wall” and lack of prompt payment will mean we may refuse admittance to your child.

  • Camp AHA! is an approved Care 4 Kids camp. Contact me if you want to apply and we can do the paperwork together.
